Korean health authorities Tuesday said they preordered enough Covid-19 vaccines from several foreign drug companies to immunize 44 million people, or 85 percent of the national population. The first batch is expected to arrive next February or March, officials said.

한국 보건당국은 화요일 국민의 85%인 4천4백만명분 코로나19 백신 물량을 사전예약 주문했다고 발표했다. 예방백신 첫 물량은 내년 2월이나 3월쯤 도착할 것이라고 보건당국은 말했다.

그러나 언제쯤 일반국민에게 백신을 접종할 지는 발표하지 않았다.

The news came as Korea added 594 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, a bit fewer than Sunday’s 615 cases and Saturday’s 631. Seoul alone detected 212 cases Monday, while Gyeonggi registered 146, according to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

코로나19 신규확진자가 토요일 631명, 일요일 615명, 월요일 594명에 이르는 가운데 백신 확보 발표가 나왔다. 질병관리청 자료에 따르면 월요일 서울에서만 212명, 경기에서 146명 신규확진자가 발생했다.

Minister of Health and Welfare Park Neunghoo announced in a press briefing Tuesday that the Korean government has agreed to purchase 20 million shots each from AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna, as well as 4 million shots from Janssen, which is a division of Johnson & Johnson.

화요일 기자회견에서 박능후 보건복지부 장관은 한국 정부는 아스트라제네카, 화이자, 모더나 백신을 각각 2천만회분을, 존슨앤존슨 제약부문 계열사인 얀센 백신 4백만 회분을 구매하기로 합의했다고 발표했다.

The assumption is that two shots of the AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will be needed for each course of treatment. The Janssen vaccine will only need a single shot.

Altogether, the four companies will supply 64 million vaccine shots for 34 million people in Korea.

Vaccines for 10 million more people will separately be sourced through the Covax Facility, a global Covid-19 vaccine allocation plan co-led by the World Health Organization, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and Gavi.
