Newer girl groups rocked the 37th Golden Disc Awards held Saturday night, marking an especially eventful night for IVE.
The 37th Golden Disc Awards with TikTok was held in Bangkok on Saturday night. It was held offline for the first time in three years and overseas for the first time in eight years. The ceremony was emceed by singers Sung Si-kyung and Nichkhun of boy band 2PM and actors Lee Da-hee and Park So-dam.
Having taken last year’s local music charts by storm, three newly-debuted girl groups, IVE, Le Sserafim and NewJeans, took home the Rookie Artist of the Year awards.
IVE was honored with the Digital Song of the Year award for its hit dance track “Love Dive,” released last April, becoming the first ever group to win the biggest award for songs and the rookie of the year award at the same time. IVE also received an award for the Digital Song Division for “Love Dive,” and producer Seo Hyun-joo, also the vice president of Starship Entertainment, was given the Best Producer Award.
“Love Dive” was the most streamed and downloaded Korean song both domestically and globally in 2022, according to a year-end data compiled by Circle Chart.
“It has been such a joyful year, to have received huge honors in such a short amount of time,” said member Gaeul of IVE. Only members Gaeul, Jang Won-young and Rei took part in the ceremony because members An Yu-jin, Liz and Leeseo tested positive for Covid-19.
“The huge success also made us worried. But we will not be defeated by that burdensome mind and move forward,” she said.
Girl group (G)I-DLE nabbed two awards, one from the Digital Song Division for “Tomboy” and the Most Popular Artist award. Last year, the group released two albums, “I Never Die” in March and “I love” in October, topping local music charts with lead tracks “Nxde” and “Tomboy.”
BTS enjoyed yet another fruitful year, taking home four trophies — Album of the Year award for “Proof,” an award from the Album Division, TikTok Golden Disc Most Popular Artist Award and Thai Fans Support with Baoji for member J-Hope.
“I don’t think it’s easy receiving an award for the whole team,” J-Hope said, as he was the only one attending from the group. “I will receive the awards gratefully and humbly and think of them as supporting the future of BTS."
Six other acts received awards from the Digital Song Division — boy band Big Bang for “Still Life,” NewJeans for “Attention,” Kim Min-seok of ballad duo MeloMance for “DrunKen Confession,” rapper Jay Park for “Ganadara,” Psy for “That That” and trot singer Lim Young-woong for “Our Blues, Our Life.”
Girl group Blackpink’s “Born Pink,” Boy band Enhypen’s “Manifesto: Day 1,” Boy band NCT’s “Universe – The 3rd Album,” boy band NCT 127’s “2 Baddies – The 4th Album,” boy band NCT Dream’s “Glitch Mode – The 2nd Album,” boy band Stray Kids’ “Maxident” and boy band Seventeen’s “4th Album ‘Face the Sun’” were the other winners in the Album Division.
Singer Younha and rapper BE’O took home the Best Solo Artist awards and rapper BIG Naughty received the Best R&B Hiphop award. Best Group was boy band Treasure and Best Performance award went to boy band Seventeen. Psy was honored as the Artist of the Year.
