Greenpeace Protesters Scale U.K. Prime Minister’s Roof With Ease

Greenpeace activists, angered by Britain’s decision to issue new licenses for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, took their opposition to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday-or at least to the rooftop of one of his homes.

With apparent ease and unhindered by security guards, the four protesters walked onto the grounds of the manor house Sunak owns in the village of Kirby Sigston in North Yorkshire, climbed onto the roof and draped the facade with panels of black fabric.

“It really was about this image of pouring oil all over the prime minister‘s house,” said Ami McCarthy, a political campaigner for Greenpeace. “We need our prime minister to stop being so hellbent on fossil fuels.” Sunak and his family, who live in London, were not at the residence at the time, the North Yorkshire police said, and the four protesters were eventually arrested after spending several hours on the roof. They were taken into custody on suspicion of causing criminal damage and public nuisance.

Conservative lawmakers condemned the episode and said that the demonstrators had gone too far.

The protest raised concerns over the security of the leader of the British government. Sunak currently lives at the prime minister’s official Downing Street residence, but the $2.3 million manor house in the Yorkshire countryside is among several properties that he and his wife, Akshata Murty, own.

Sunak’s office declined to comment on Sunak’s security. But John Moore, managing director of Westminster Security, a high-end private security company based in London, said the incident was “a major security failure.”

McCarthy did not participate in the demonstration but received updates, and said the activists had not encountered a visible security presence at the home. She said that the protesters had “literally just walked in through a gate.”

McCarthy said the group had planned the protest to coincide with a family vacation by Sunak, who flew to the United States on Wednesday. The protesters, she said, intended to be nonviolent, and knocked on the door to ensure that nobody was at the property. She said they also cooperated with police when they arrived.

북해에서 석유와 가스 채굴권을 추가로 허가해 준 영국 정부에 화가 난 그린피스 시위대가 지난 3일(현지 시간) 리시 수낵 영국 총리에 항의하는 시위에 나섰다. 이들은 수낵 총리가 소유한 여러 자택 중 한 곳의 지붕을 점거했다.

4명의 시위대는 이날 보안 요원들의 별다른 제지를 받지 않고 매우 쉽게 노스 요크셔 지역 커비 식스턴에 있는 수낵 총리의 저택으로 걸어 들어갔다. 그리고는 지붕 위로 올라가 저택의 정면에 긴 검은 천을 늘어뜨렸다.

그린피스의 정치담당 활동가 에이미 맥카티는 “그린피스가 저택 정면에 설치한 검은 천은 총리의 집 위에 검은 석유를 붓는 장면을 상징한다”고 말했다. 맥카티는 이어 “총리는 화석 연료에 광분하는 행위를 멈춰야 한다”고 주장했다.

수낵 총리와 그의 가족들은 당시 이 저택에 없었다고 노스 요크셔 경찰은 밝혔다. 시위대 4명은 수시간 동안 지붕을 점거한 후 경찰에 체포됐다. 이들에겐 재물 손괴와 공공 소란죄가 적용됐다.

영국 보수당 의원들은 총리의 저택 지붕을 점거한 이번 시위대의 행동이 도를 넘었다고 비판했다. 이번 시위는 영국 총리의 안전에 대한 우려도 불러 일으켰다.

수낵 총리는 현재 총리 관저인 다우닝가 10번지에서 생활하고 있다. 이번에 시위대에 점거된 230만 달러(약 31억원) 짜리인 요크셔 전원 저택은 수낵 총리와 부인 악샤타 무르티 여사가 소유한 여러 채의 부동산 중 하나다.

영국 총리실은 이번 사태와 수낵 총리의 보안 이슈에 대해 공식적인 입장을 밝히지 않았다. 하지만 고위층을 위한 보안 서비스를 운영하는 회사인 웨스트민스터 시큐리티의 존 무어 상무는 이번 사건을 분석한 후 “심각한 보안 실패”라고 규정했다.

그린피스의 공식 입장을 논평한 그린피스 행동가 맥카티는 이번 시위에 참석하진 않았지만 진행 상황을 수시로 보고 받았다. 맥카티는 시위대가 자택에서 보안요원과 전혀 마주치지 않았고, “거의 정문으로 당당하게 걸어 들어갔다”고 설명했다.

맥카티는 시위대가 총리 가족과 마주치지 않기 위해 이번 저택 시위를 일부러 수낵 총리와 그 가족이 미국으로 휴가 간 틈을 이용해 계획했다고 밝혔다. 수낵 총리 가족은 지난 2일 미국으로 휴가를 떠났다.

맥카티는 또한 시위대가 평화적인 시위를 계획했고, 아무도 저택에 없다는 사실을 확인하기 위해 문을 두드린 후 들어갔다고도 덧붙였다. 그는 경찰이 도착한 이후 시위대가 경찰에 순순히 협조했다고 말했다.
